Prime rate, or Prime Lending Rate, is a term applied in many countries to a reference interest rate used by banks. The term originally indicated the rate of interest at which banks lent to favored customers, i.e., those with high credibility, though this is no longer always the case. Some variable interest rates may be expressed as a percentage above or below prime rate. Use in different banking systemsUSA and CanadaHistorically, in North American banking, the prime rate was the actual interest rate although this is no longer the case. The prime rate varies little among banks, and adjustments are generally made by banks at the same time, although this does not happen with frequency. The prime rate is currently 3.25% in the United States. Canadian prime rate is currently 2.25%. OverviewHistorical chart of the effective Federal Funds RateIn the US, the prime rate runs approximately 300 basis points (or 3 percentage points) above the federal funds rate, the interest rate that banks charge to each other for overnight loans made to fulfill reserve funding requirements. The Federal funds rate plus a much smaller increment is frequently used for lending to the most creditworthy borrowers today, as is LIBOR, the London Interbank Offered Rate. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times per year wherein they set a target for the federal funds rate. Other rates, including the prime rate, derive from this base rate. When 23 out of 30 of the United States' largest banks change their prime rate, the WSJ prints a composite prime rate change. From Wikipedia under the

Q. If the economy needs growth, then prime rate will be low; if economy is doing really well, then prime rate goes up. That's what I've heard at least. What gives? Asked by Sea star - Thu Oct 2 13:33:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is determined by the level of inflation and the demand for borrowing money. Answered by kenoplayer - Thu Oct 2 13:44:20 2008 What is the difference between PRIME RATE and the current interest rates? Q. For example I know that prime rate today is 7.5%. However, in regard to mortgage loans the going rate for someone with excellent credit is 6.25%. I'm just not clear on the difference. Asked by uv30sunblock - Fri Mar 10 17:58:07 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The prime rate is the rate on corporate loans posted by at least 75% of the the nation's 30 largest banks. Current interest rates could have a lot of meanings: The Fed Funds rate is set by the Federal Reserve and is the overnight rate banks charge each other to borrow. Most interest rates a determined by the market (treasuries, mortgages, and corporate debt). Higher risk investments usually have higher yields and the length of the investment (time to maturity) also affects the interest rate. Answered by OC Surfer - Fri Mar 10 18:13:08 2006 How is it that the FED provides 1/2 point drop on the prime rate, and the banks increase the avg APR 1/2 point?
Q. How is this possible? I thought the whole idea was to lower the interest rates to the public so that it would spawn more home loans? It would appear that the only thing occurring is the banks are taking advantage of the situation by putting the money in their pockets? Asked by oldandthesail - Fri Oct 31 00:49:40 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Actually, the FED is trying to ward off inflation, not specifically help with home loans. And frankly, more cheap n'easy home loans isn't really what we need right now. That's what got us into this mess. Also, look at the other side of this: the same low interest rate you love on your loan sucks on your savings account. Personally, I'd rather see the rates go up. Of course the banks aren't charging the lowest rate--they are for-profit entities after all. Interest is probably the main way they make money. It's just like a markup on a suit at a store.
